West Indies batter Amir Jangoo has admitted his side must get much better after losing the fourth ODI to New Zealand by one wicket at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown.
Qualification worries
West Indies were bowled out for 188 in 44.4 overs, leaving their hopes of reaching the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup in the balance. They also missed the 2023 edition. It was the third match in a row in which they failed to use their full 50 overs.
Jangoo top-scored with a patient 51 off 73 balls. He said the squad has enough quality, naming the bowlers and young Vitel Lawes, who has made a breakthrough in the series, but they must start turning potential into wins. He said that given the position they are in, they do not deserve to go to the qualifiers, while knowing the quality in the dressing room.
On the batting, he said not lasting 50 overs in three games was on the batters, who must examine it internally and try to fix it in the one game left. He called the result a hard pill to swallow given what was at stake, and said the team would be ready for the qualifiers.
How the game finished
Despite the small total, the hosts almost defended it, with Gudakesh Motie taking five wickets. Mitchell Santner and Jayden Lennox kept their nerve to see New Zealand home. Mark Chapman had top-scored for the Black Caps with 80 off 82 balls, and they now hold an unassailable 3-1 lead.
