England and Surrey wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith will miss the rest of the season after scans revealed a dislocated left ring finger and a cracked thumb.
How it happened
Smith was hurt while keeping wicket to Ollie Robinson after lunch on the second day of the Test against Pakistan. Rest is the only treatment needed, so he cannot return soon.
He still showed resolve, making 69 at No. 7. Jordan Cox kept wicket in Pakistan’s second innings, and Smith did not bat again as England chased down 130 to win the match.
England and Surrey consequences
Smith has also been left out of England’s white-ball squads for the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka, which begins on September 17, 2026.
For Surrey the timing is awkward. They host Glamorgan at The Kia Oval on September 16, with two Division One matches left. They sit sixth, 21 points clear of the relegation zone, and must finish without their first-choice keeper.
No pitch charge
Surrey will not face a charge over the Kia Oval pitch used in their one-wicket win over Yorkshire earlier this month. That surface saw 23 wickets fall on the second day, but Surrey will keep the points from the match.
