Irfan Pathan has praised Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s India debut but warned that tougher tests lie ahead.
Sooryavanshi played in the second T20I against England in Manchester, scoring 14 from 10 balls before falling to spin. India lost by four wickets, but Pathan liked the youngster’s confidence and attacking approach.
A landmark for the game
Speaking on JioStar’s Game Plan, Pathan called a 15-year-old playing international cricket a big moment not only for India but for world cricket, saying it inspires young boys and girls to believe they can do the same.
He accepted Sooryavanshi would be disappointed not to turn a promising start into more. What impressed Pathan was that the batter stayed true to his natural game.
Areas to improve
Pathan thinks the real challenge starts now, as opponents will draw up specific plans against the young left-hander, especially with spin. He believes Sooryavanshi has the talent but must work on balance and shot selection when he advances down the pitch.
He explained that in England stepping out to spinners can work because the ball does not turn much, but staying balanced and close to the ball will be important.
Third T20I
With the five-match series level at 1-1, India next play at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Pathan would make one change, bringing in Prince Yadav for Ravi Bishnoi to add pace, unless conditions strongly favour spin.
The match could be an important one as both sides try to take the lead.
