Heinrich Malan Steps Down as Ireland Head Coach After Four Years

Heinrich Malan is leaving his job as Ireland head coach. The 45-year-old took the position in 2022, and his time in charge saw three successive qualifications for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Ireland’s first three Test wins and a wider group of players capable of international cricket. It ended with a historic T20I series victory over India.

Why Now

His contract was due to run until early 2027, but Malan feels this is the right moment to step aside after the India series. Leaving now gives his successor time to prepare for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers, which begin with an ODI series against Afghanistan in August.

Looking Back

Malan described leading Ireland as an absolute privilege and thanked the players, the coaching staff and the Irish cricket community. He listed the moments he was proudest of: the T20 World Cup win over England, the first Test victory against Afghanistan, the first home Test win over Zimbabwe, the series win against India, and wins over Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa.

Governing Body’s Response

Graeme West, Cricket Ireland’s Director of High Performance, praised Malan’s contribution, in particular his part in deepening the player pool and making Ireland a more competitive side. West thanked him for his leadership and commitment and said the progress made would keep helping Irish cricket for years.

Cricket Ireland will now search for a new head coach to take the team through the next World Cup cycle.
