Hasan Mahmud Credits Planning and Patience for Bangladesh’s Darwin Triumph

Hasan Mahmud, the 26-year-old fast bowler, was the hero of Bangladesh’s first Test victory over Australia. He took 6 for 55 as the hosts were dismissed for 198 in the first innings, the best Test bowling return by a Bangladesh player against Australia, and he was named Player of the Match.

A plan executed with patience

After the game, Hasan pointed to preparation as the key. He said the squad gave everything in practice and trusted itself without worrying about the outcome, and that plans worked out with the coaches, partly by watching video, were carried onto the field. The bowlers stayed patient and held their line and length, and the results followed.

He also thought about what the win means back home, saying the people of Bangladesh would be celebrating and would be very happy for him.

The result and the table

Bangladesh chased the 57 needed for the loss of one wicket, winning by nine wickets and taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The performance showed the side’s growing belief in Test cricket and their ability to take on established opponents away from home.

It also lifted them in the 2025-27 World Test Championship. Bangladesh are now fourth, with three wins from five matches and a points percentage of 66.67.

The second Test is due to begin in Mackay on August 22.
