Bangladesh Selector Bashar Upbeat on WTC Final Hopes After Australia Draw

Bangladesh Selector Bashar Upbeat on WTC Final Hopes After Australia Draw

Bangladesh’s chief selector, Bashar, believes the team is well placed in the race for the World Test Championship final after a historic tour of Australia, though he warned against reading too much into the progress so far.

The squad flew home on August 25 after a two-Test series in Australia finished level at 1-1. Bangladesh recorded their first Test win on Australian soil in Darwin, before Australia hit back to square the series.

Fourth in the WTC table

Bangladesh are fourth in the 2025-27 WTC standings with six matches left in the cycle. Their recent results also include a 2-0 Test series win over Pakistan, which has lifted their hopes of ending up in the top two.

Quoted by NDTV Sports, Bashar said the team is now in a very good position and has five important Tests ahead, adding that it remains to be seen how things unfold.

A long way to go

Bashar was careful not to overstate the case. He said he could not yet call Bangladesh a very good Test side and felt there was still a long road ahead, but he said the team had made a statement of its own.

He also spoke about respect. Before leaving for Australia, the squad wanted to come back with greater recognition from the wider cricket world, and Bashar said he believed they had achieved that.

What comes next

Bangladesh’s next Test commitment arrives later in 2026, when they host West Indies for two matches. They then travel to South Africa in November for another two-Test series as their WTC campaign continues.
