Finn Allen’s innings against Gujarat Titans helped keep Kolkata Knight Riders’ playoff hopes alive, with the opener taking apart one of the tournament’s strongest bowling attacks. Afterwards he spoke about how a short break from the team turned his season around.
From slump to selection drop
April was a difficult month for the New Zealander, who scored only 81 runs in five innings before being left out of the XI. Allen admitted the poor run had affected him mentally.
What changed
Allen said the time away allowed him to reset and gain perspective, and he began to enjoy batting again. He accepted that he had put too much pressure on himself, which hurt his confidence and mindset. The break gave him room to relax, reflect and return in a better state.
The results have been striking. In May he has made 29, 100 not out, 18 and 93.
Patience before power
Against Gujarat, the 27-year-old combined control with aggression. He worked through tricky early conditions and good new-ball bowling before opening up. His plan, he explained, was to take the scoring chances that came, rotate the strike when needed and, above all, not lose his wicket early.
With their opener back in form, the defending champions will hope he can keep going as they chase a playoff place in the closing stage of IPL 2026.
