Bangladesh have beaten Australia in a Test for the first time, winning the opening match of the two-Test series in Darwin by nine wickets. The visitors were dominant with both bat and ball and now lead the series 1-0.
Hasan Mahmud rips through Australia
Hasan Mahmud set the tone with a spell of 6 for 55 that bowled Australia out for 198 in their first innings. That effort gave Bangladesh control of the contest from an early stage.
Tanzid’s hundred builds a big lead
Bangladesh replied with 426, a first-innings advantage of 228. Tanzid Hasan top-scored with 101 from 197 balls, with solid support from Najmul Hossain Shanto (84), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (65), Mominul Haque (49) and Mushfiqur Rahim (36).
Green fights, Miraz finishes the job
Australia showed some resistance second time around, with Cameron Green making a determined 104. Even so, Bangladesh’s bowlers kept up the pressure and the hosts were dismissed for 284. Miraz took 5 for 66 and Hasan Mahmud added three more wickets.
A short chase
That left a target of only 57. Tanzid fell for four, but Shadman Islam and Mominul steadied things, finishing unbeaten on 25 and 30 respectively as Bangladesh got there in 14.2 overs.
The result is a landmark for Bangladesh cricket. They are back in Australia after a gap of 23 years, and have already beaten the hosts in Darwin to move ahead in the series.
