Chennai Super Kings have been dealt an injury blow, with young batter Ayush Mhatre reportedly ruled out for about three weeks with a hamstring tear. He will have scans on Monday in Mumbai, where CSK play their next match on April 23. Coach Michael Hussey admitted the injury looks bad and called the young No. 3 a significant loss.
What happened
Mhatre had made a quick 20 off 13 balls in CSK’s chase when he went for a sharp second run with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. He pulled up straight away, holding his left hamstring, and needed treatment.
He stayed on briefly but found it hard to run between the wickets and was eventually caught by Heinrich Klaasen off Nitish Kumar Reddy. Support staff had to help him off the field.
Hussey’s update
After the match Hussey said the scans would show the full extent of the problem, but early signs pointed to a serious setback. He also praised Mhatre’s form and said the absence, though unfortunate, could give another young player in the squad an opening.
What comes next
CSK now get a short break before facing old rivals Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Options to fill the vacant top-order spot, including Urvil Patel, are being considered.
