AnalysisBangar Weighs Up KKR and PBKS Playoff Hopes in a Tight IPL Race
Sanjay Bangar says Punjab must win two of three to stay alive, while four straight wins have KKR dreaming of one of the great IPL comebacks.
Sunrisers Hyderabad lost three of their first four matches but then won five in a row, beating Rajasthan Royals twice and Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. A recent defeat showed how much they depend on their top four, who contribute more than 77% of their runs.
Abhishek Sharma leads the run charts with 440 at a strike rate of 206.57, and has 281 runs and 24 sixes in his last three games against Punjab. Travis Head has 137 at 256 with back-to-back fifties, Ishan Kishan 354 in ten games, and Heinrich Klaasen 425 with four fifties. No other SRH batter has reached 100. Eshan Malinga has 15 wickets, with Sakib Hussain and Praful Hinge sharing 17, but no SRH bowler has an economy below nine.
Punjab Kings are coming off two defeats, with their bowling the main weakness. Arshdeep Singh is the only bowler on double-figure wickets (10) and the attack goes at over 9.5 an over. With the bat, Priyansh Arya has 285 at a strike rate of 247.82, Prabhsimran Singh 361 with four fifties, and Shreyas Iyer 328, including an unbeaten 69 against SRH. Marcus Stoinis and Suryansh Shedge add middle-order depth.
The Hyderabad pitch is usually even, with true bounce, good carry and a fast outfield. Pacers can find a little movement early, and the surface slows in the middle overs, giving spinners some assistance. Evening dew can make gripping the ball harder, helping teams batting second. Totals of 190 or more are common here, and around 200 is seen as par.
At 7:30 pm in Hyderabad it should be warm but comfortable at 28–30°C, with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies and moderate humidity. Rain is unlikely, a light breeze is expected, and a little dew may form in the second innings.
Our preview picks Punjab Kings by a narrow margin, as their batting is less dependent on a few players.
Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen have scored 1,552 runs at a strike rate of 181, over 77% of the team’s total.
Their bowling: they have lost both games where they defended a target and have an economy rate above 9.5.
