Team NewsMunaf Patel tells Delhi Capitals the time for a relaxed mindset is over
Delhi bowling coach Munaf Patel says the Capitals must win consistently to stay in the playoff race, with CSK level on points before their clash.
Delhi Capitals sit seventh with four wins and five defeats, and a net run rate of -0.895 is hurting them. All four wins have come while chasing; in the two games they batted first, they made 264/2 once and were bowled out for 75 once.
The batting averages just 52 in the powerplay over the last five games but has finished strongly, scoring 65, 101 and 78 in the last six overs of recent matches. The bowling has been the weaker side, conceding 200-plus in three of the last four games and 88, 91 and 104 at the death. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav have provided control in the middle.
Chennai Super Kings also have four wins and five losses but have won three of their last five, including against Mumbai Indians, and are sixth with a net run rate of 0.005. Three of their wins came batting first, and they have historically struggled when chasing 180-plus. They average about 61 in the powerplay and are strongest between overs 7 and 15, where spin and slower balls hold the opposition. The powerplay is their weak point with the ball, conceding 50–55 at nearly nine an over.
Delhi’s pitch is generally flat with good bounce, and short boundaries help batters push totals towards 170–200 or more. New-ball bowlers may get slight movement, and the surface can slow a little in the middle overs, bringing spinners in. Under lights, dew makes the ball harder to hold and gives the chasing side an edge.
At 7:30 pm in Delhi expect warm, slightly humid weather of 33–36°C and a hazy, partly cloudy sky. There is a low to moderate chance of brief showers or isolated storms, but major interruptions are unlikely. A light breeze may arrive after sunset.
Our preview leans to Delhi Capitals, who have had success chasing at home.
Delhi have four wins and five defeats, seventh with eight points. Chennai have also won four and lost five, and are sixth after beating Mumbai Indians.
Our preview considers about 185 a competitive total on this ground.
