West Indies beat Pakistan in the opening Test of the series, a result that has a bearing on the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings and continues the side’s revival in the format.
A resurgent team
Earlier this month, led by Roston Chase, West Indies ended a 23-year wait by winning a Test series against Sri Lanka. The win over Pakistan followed that run.
First innings
Batting first in conditions that suited fast bowlers, West Indies reached 311. Shai Hope made 92 and Kavem Hodge 84 to give the innings a foundation. Pakistan replied with 282, with captain Shan Masood scoring a fine century and Imam-ul-Haq adding a half-century. Justin Greaves took his first Test five-wicket haul, including five consecutive wicket-maidens, and West Indies led by 29.
Second innings
Batting was hard for both sides, with uneven bounce and movement, and West Indies were bowled out for 181. Mohammad Abbas took five wickets, while Shamar Joseph hit a lively 38 off 27 balls.
That left Pakistan chasing 211. The chase collapsed, and Babar Azam finished unbeaten on 58 in a total of 120. Apart from him, only two Pakistan batters reached double figures. Jayden Seales was the main destroyer, returning figures of 5 for 20 to secure the historic win for the hosts.
