Adelaide Strikers are considering Ben Stokes as an opening partner for Matt Short in the Big Bash. Stokes has joined on a one-year deal and will be available through the finals, with the club reportedly seeing off interest from the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades.
A return after more than a decade
The 35-year-old retired from international cricket in June 2026 and now prepares to return to the competition. His only previous BBL spell was four matches for the Melbourne Renegades in the 2014–15 season.
Paine’s plan with the bat
Head coach Tim Paine said the Strikers viewed Stokes as a top-three batter from the first conversations, and that the all-rounder was happy with the role. Paine believes the pace and bounce found on many Australian pitches could suit Stokes’ aggressive style.
Short is also ready to drop to No. 3 if needed, which would give Adelaide extra flexibility at the top of the order. A Stokes and Short opening pair is expected to generate plenty of interest.
Bowling and public reception
Paine also sees Stokes as a possible bowling option, even though injuries have at times limited how much he can bowl. His all-round ability could make him a central figure for the Strikers across the season.
Paine added that, despite the intense Ashes rivalry, Stokes has won broad respect in Australia for his competitiveness, skill and will to win, so his return is likely to draw considerable attention from local fans.
