Sourav Ganguly Reports Threatening Letters to Kolkata Police

Sourav Ganguly has filed a police complaint in Kolkata over letters containing threats against him and his family. The complaint was lodged at Thakurpukur Police Station on Monday, August 10, 2026, after the latest letter reached the office of the Bengal cricket president.

What the complaint says

The most recent letter reportedly carried explicit threats, prompting the matter to be taken to the police. According to the complaint, the letters were couriered to the Ganguly residence, with the sender named as Arun Kumar, reportedly from Belgharia. The latest was reportedly written in English and threatened Ganguly, his wife and people associated with him.

The complaint noted that earlier letters had been seen as hateful or derogatory, but the latest ones escalated to direct threats to the lives and safety of Ganguly, Dona and those working with him. The family asked for immediate police action and a thorough investigation.

Police response

Kolkata Police confirmed an investigation is under way and officers are trying to identify the sender and trace where the courier items came from. They are examining a phone number mentioned in the correspondence and checking whether the named sender was responsible or whether his identity was misused.

The state government’s security department has been informed and is reviewing Ganguly’s existing security. No extra measures have been confirmed publicly. Police have told his representative that all necessary steps are being taken.

Ganguly, a former India captain and BCCI president, is currently president of the Cricket Association of Bengal.
