Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s omission from India’s U-19 squad has nothing to do with form or age. According to NDTV, a BCCI regulation introduced in 2016 stops a player from appearing in more than one U-19 World Cup.
Sooryavanshi played in the 2026 U-19 World Cup, so he cannot take part in another, even if he is still within the age limit. He has therefore also been left out of the current U-19 planning cycle.
Earlier cases
He is not the first to be affected. Washington Sundar was ruled out of the 2018 U-19 World Cup despite being eligible by age. Before the rule, players such as Sarfaraz Khan, Sandeep Sharma and Vijay Zol featured in more than one edition.
The Australia series
India’s juniors play Australia in three 50-over matches in Rajkot on September 18, 21 and 23. Two multi-day games follow, the first in Rajkot from September 27 to 30 and the second from October 5 to 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium ‘B’ Ground in Ahmedabad.
Lakshya Raichandani captains the 50-over side with Yashbardhan Chauhan as vice-captain, and the roles are swapped for the red-ball games. The squad includes Aaryavir Sehwag, son of Virender Sehwag, and Anvay Dravid, son of Rahul Dravid.
Aaryavir, a leg-spinning all-rounder, has played two matches for West Delhi Lions in the 2026 Delhi Premier League. Anvay scored 101 runs in two 50-over games on India U-19’s July tour of Sri Lanka, where India lost the ODI series 2-1 but won the red-ball series 1-0.
Manal Chauhan and Chigurupati Venkata have come into the 50-over squad, while Sagar Virk, Anmoljeet Singh and Ishan Sood miss out.
