Joe Root has asked his England players to enjoy their series victory over Pakistan, but to do so with discipline. The win at Lord’s was England’s second in a row after they finished the opening Test at Headingley inside three days.
It was also the first red-ball series win of Root’s captaincy, which began after Ben Stokes’ retirement.
A call for measured celebrations
Root said that winning Tests and series is hard, so the players should celebrate, but in a sensible, grown-up manner.
He called the result a positive start for a new-look England and stressed the need to build a lasting winning culture rather than relax after one success.
The captain also saw encouragement in the team’s improved understanding of how they get out. He expects more contributions from the batting group in the final Test at Edgbaston.
Robinson leads the way
England’s win at Lord’s rested on a fine bowling display. Ollie Robinson took eight wickets in the match and was named Player of the Match. A disciplined attack exposed Pakistan’s problems against the ball.
With the series already won, England will now aim for a 3-0 sweep at Edgbaston.
