PSL 2027 Could Move to January as PCB Weighs an Earlier Window

The Pakistan Super League could be played in January in 2027, but nothing has been decided. The PCB and franchise owners have no shared position, and neither side has confirmed a schedule change.

Who is pushing for it

The idea was reportedly raised by Walee Technologies, which holds PSL media rights in Pakistan through 2029 and had international rights for the 2026 season. It also owns the Rawalpindi franchise. The broadcaster reportedly feels the April-May slot after Ramadan brings weaker advertising returns.

Franchise owners are understood to prefer keeping April. The board has also suggested a mid-year tournament under the current rights arrangement as an extra revenue source, and the PSL governing council has discussed esports amid worries about falling viewership.

Why the calendar is open

The first nine editions, from 2016 to 2024, were mostly held in February-March. The 2025 and 2026 seasons moved to April-May because the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup took up the earlier months. With both finished, Pakistan has no confirmed international commitments between mid-November and late the following year.

The obstacles

Overseas availability is the main worry. The SA20 and Australia’s Big Bash League both run in January and February, and PSL teams rely heavily on foreign players who may be contracted elsewhere.

Weather is another issue. Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi can have cold nights in winter, and fog is common in parts of Punjab, which could disrupt match timings, travel and broadcasts.

The PCB must balance commercial gains against these challenges, and further talks are expected before any decision.
