Pakistan Lose Eight WTC Points After Slow Over-Rate in Dhaka Test

Pakistan have been penalised eight World Test Championship points for a slow over-rate in their first Test against Bangladesh, which they lost by 104 runs in Dhaka.

The sanction

Pakistan were found to be eight overs behind the required rate at the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium. The deduction drops them to eighth place in the WTC table with four points, just above the West Indies.

Match referee Jeff Crowe of the ICC Elite Panel imposed the penalty. Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players lose five per cent of their match fee for every over short. Article 16.11.2 of the WTC playing conditions takes one point per over, which produced the eight-point loss.

Captain Shan Masood accepted the charge and the proposed sanctions, so no formal hearing was needed. The offence was reported by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Kumar Dharmasena, third umpire Allahuddien Palekar and fourth umpire Gazi Sohel.

Bangladesh benefit

The result lifted Bangladesh to sixth in the standings, their first win of the cycle. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was central to it, scoring a century in the first innings and a key 87 in the second.

The second Test between the sides is due to begin on May 16.
