Nigar Sultana reprimanded and given a demerit point for throwing her bat

Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana has been given an official reprimand and one demerit point by the ICC after throwing her bat following a dismissal.

What happened

The match had been cut to nine overs a side because of rain. During Bangladesh’s innings, Nigar was dismissed and threw her bat to the ground as she walked off. She was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which covers the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.

The process

The match officials laid the charge: on-field umpires Eloise Sheridan and Shathira Jakir Jesy, third umpire Rokeya Sultana and fourth umpire Champa Chakma. Nigar accepted the sanction proposed by ICC Match Referee Supriya Rani Das, so no formal hearing was needed.

How demerit points work

As it was her first offence in a 24-month period, she received one demerit point. Under ICC regulations, a player who reaches four or more demerit points within 24 months is given suspension points, and these can eventually lead to bans from international cricket depending on severity.
