Moises Henriques has called time on his career in Australian domestic cricket, though at 39 he is not quite finished with the sport. Born in Portugal, the batter now qualifies to play for that country and is expected to turn out in the upcoming World Cup Qualifier.
A record-holder at home
Henriques departs as one of the most decorated players the Australian game has produced. The right-hander made 420 appearances across formats for New South Wales and the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, which makes him the most capped domestic cricketer in the country’s history.
He was part of all 15 BBL seasons and holds the competition record for appearances, with 154 matches. For the Sixers he scored 3,324 runs and picked up 22 wickets, and the club won three titles during his time.
Why he chose to stop
The Sixers decided not to offer him a new deal, and other BBL franchises showed interest. Henriques, however, felt that moving elsewhere was not right, and he stayed true to New South Wales before deciding it was time to look ahead.
He told Cricinfo that he had been lucky to earn a living from cricket for 22 years, and that the moment had come to stop playing and consider the next phase of his life.
Sixers history
Henriques was a member of the first Sixers side to win the BBL, in 2012. In the final against the Perth Scorchers he made 70 and was named Player of the Match.
The same year he was in the Sixers squad that won the Champions League T20. Team-mates in that dressing room included Steve Smith, Brad Haddin, Nathan McCullum, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.
