Chennai Super Kings have appointed Mohit Sharma as their bowling coach, bringing the former India seamer into the dugout after his playing days.
Sharma, 37, retired from professional cricket in December 2025. He takes over from Eric Simmons. CSK chief executive Kasi Viswanathan said head coach Zaheer Khan recommended him, and told The Times of India that Sharma was excellent for the franchise as a player and that the club hopes he does a great job in his new role. Further coaching staff appointments, he added, will follow Zaheer’s recommendations in the coming weeks.
IPL career
Sharma played 120 IPL matches and took 134 wickets. He had two separate spells with CSK across four seasons, and his best campaign came in 2014, when he claimed 23 wickets and finished as the leading wicket-taker, winning the Purple Cap.
He later played for Punjab Kings from 2016 to 2018 and then for other franchises including Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals. He took 41 wickets in two seasons with Gujarat.
International record
For India, Sharma played 26 ODIs and eight T20Is, taking 31 wickets in ODIs and six in T20Is.
His move into coaching lets him draw on that international experience and his time with several IPL teams to help develop CSK’s bowlers. His return to the franchise, now on the coaching staff, also links his earlier spells there with a new career as the team prepares for the next IPL season.
