Jonathan Trott Joins Ireland as Short-Term Consultant for Afghanistan ODIs

Ireland have brought in Jonathan Trott on a short-term consultancy before their five-match ODI series with Afghanistan. The 45-year-old begins his 14-day stint next week, helping with preparation and offering matchday advice.

Trott’s background

Trott played 52 Tests, 68 ODIs and seven T20Is for England between 2007 and 2015. He then moved into coaching, working with England Under-19s, Warwickshire, Kent and Scotland, before becoming Afghanistan Men’s head coach in 2022. He left that post in February 2026.

His knowledge of Afghanistan is expected to be useful. Graeme West, Cricket Ireland’s Director of High Performance, said the series is critical to preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in early 2027, and called it a rare chance to bring a world-class coach into the senior setup with up-to-date insight into the opposition. West added that Trott can also share his leadership experience and coaching approach.

Fixtures

The first two ODIs are at Bready Cricket Club in Northern Ireland on 5 and 7 August. The last three are at Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast on 10, 12 and 14 August.

It is Ireland’s first assignment since their historic 2-0 T20I series win over India last month.
