Hetmyer Called Up for West Indies’ Last Two ODIs as Greaves Is Sidelined

Shimron Hetmyer has been drafted into the West Indies squad for the last two ODIs against New Zealand, replacing the injured Justin Greaves.

Why Hetmyer is available

Hetmyer had been unavailable for the first three matches because of franchise commitments with the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket 2026. The Orcas finished fifth and missed the playoffs, which freed him for national duty earlier than expected.

The 29-year-old scored 164 runs in 10 MLC matches at a strike rate of 136.66. His last ODI for West Indies was in June 2025. He was recalled for the Sri Lanka ODI series earlier this year but did not play any of the three games, so this is another chance to re-establish himself.

Greaves under observation

Greaves remains under close medical watch. Cricket West Indies says he will be reassessed before the remaining two ODIs and the two-match Test series against Pakistan that follows. He recently had a breakthrough Test series against Sri Lanka, making a career-best 180 and winning Player of the Series as West Indies took their first Test series win since 2023.

Where the series stands

West Indies lead the five-match ODI series 1-0 after a seven-wicket win in the opener. The first three games are in Providence and the last two in Bridgetown, and Cricket West Indies is expected to name the squad for those later this week.
