Shubman Gill has reached 3,000 Test runs, doing so on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. He took the landmark in the 23rd over, when a thick outside edge off seamer Keshara Nuwantha ran away to the boundary.
He had needed only seven runs after narrowly falling short in the first Test in Galle. His first scoring shot in Colombo was a whip off left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, and the milestone followed later in the innings.
Ahead of Kapil Dev
At 26 years and 349 days, Gill got there seven days sooner than Kapil Dev, who was 26 years and 356 days old when he reached 3,000. That moves Gill into a select group of Indians to reach the mark before turning 27.
| Rank | Player | Age at 3,000 runs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sachin Tendulkar | 23 years, 228 days |
| 2 | Virender Sehwag | 26 years, 157 days |
| 3 | Dilip Vengsarkar | 26 years, 263 days |
| 4 | Shubman Gill | 26 years, 349 days |
| 5 | Kapil Dev | 26 years, 356 days |
A growing stature
Tendulkar remains well clear at the top, having got there at 23 years and 228 days. Sehwag and Vengsarkar also beat Gill to the mark, while Kapil drops to fifth.
With his Test career still at an early stage, the India captain will now aim to climb further up the list of his country’s leading run-scorers.
