Chandimal Sent for Hospital Scans After Heavy Fall Fielding in Galle

Sri Lanka were handed an injury scare on the fourth day of the Galle Test when Dinesh Chandimal was taken to hospital after a heavy fall in the field.

The accident happened in the fourth over of India’s second innings. Chandimal ran from deep midwicket towards deep square leg to cut off a shot from KL Rahul, dived to make the stop and came down hard on his shoulder, with his neck also absorbing a significant blow.

Medical staff were on the field straight away and helped him off. Pasindu Sooriyabandara took over as substitute fielder. Chandimal was then taken for scans, and whether he can play any further part in the match will depend on what they show.

Is a replacement possible?

Should Chandimal be diagnosed with concussion, Sri Lanka would be able to ask for a concussion replacement for the rest of the Test. Sooriyabandara, already on the field as substitute, is a batting option within the squad.

India firmly in control

India began the day 178 runs ahead after making 462 in their first innings and dismissing Sri Lanka for 284. During day four they stretched the lead beyond 250, even though Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rahul and Shubman Gill all fell in the opening session.

Chandimal made only four in Sri Lanka’s first innings. His injury adds to the uncertainty for a home side already trying to stay in a contest where India hold the upper hand.
