Cameron White has been appointed head coach of the Melbourne Stars, switching from city rivals Melbourne Renegades, where he had been in charge for the past two seasons.
A wider reshuffle
The move stems from Cricket Victoria’s decision to sell its stake in the Renegades, part of a broader privatisation drive set to redefine the BBL. The Stars will stay under Cricket Victoria’s control, while the Renegades will operate more independently from Junction Oval, still receiving CV funding until a full ownership transition is completed. With the season close, big squad or structural changes are expected to be limited.
CV chief executive Nick Cummins said the priority was stability this season while longer-term ownership talks continue, and that a change in Renegades ownership should progress over the coming months.
Elsewhere, former Stars general manager Max Abbott is due to run operations at the Renegades, with ex-Australia fast bowler Clint McKay handling high-performance and list management. Former Victoria coach Greg Shipperd has been linked with the Renegades head coach job. He has led Victoria to several Sheffield Shield and domestic T20 titles, taken the Stars to early BBL finals and won championships with the Sydney Sixers.
What is still to be settled
The proposed privatisation model still needs clearance on governance and financial frameworks. These include changes to Cricket Australia’s structure, agreements with the Australian Cricketers’ Association and future revenue distribution. Once approved, franchises are expected to move towards self-governance, with market valuations shaping any ownership sales. The Renegades are likely to be the first team put on the market.
