R Ashwin has questioned India’s decision to leave out Sanju Samson, saying the move was not fair to a player who had served the team well.
Samson, Player of the Tournament at this year’s T20 World Cup, lost his place after three low scores, two against Ireland and one against England. In-form youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi replaced him.
Message to the player
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin said he was concerned about the effect on Samson, who had been among India’s best performers before the England series. He wondered how the batter would feel and how motivated he would be in training, adding that everyone, Gautam Gambhir and the coaching staff included, knows it was not fair on him. Ashwin said the management would now have to handle the situation.
He also suggested Samson might now be seen as a back-up to Ishan Kishan at No. 3, particularly as India’s top order has several left-handers.
Backing players who deliver
Ashwin accepted that selection is never easy and that tough calls are sometimes needed. But he argued the bigger error was dropping a player who has given such good returns, comparing him to a stock that should be kept for longer despite a few bad days.
Outside influence
Ashwin also asked whether social media narratives and outside noise are reaching the dressing room and affecting decisions. Having followed Indian cricket for a long time, he said the best leaders never let that noise in.
His remarks have restarted the debate about India’s selection policy and whether established performers get enough support during lean spells.
