Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey has credited Bangladesh paceman Nahid Rana after a spell of 4 for 41 that put his side under heavy pressure while chasing 284. Rana’s pace and bounce on a surface that helped quick bowlers removed Carey himself and captain Josh Inglis in the top order.
Pace felt first-hand
Carey said the Australian batters knew about Rana’s speed, but facing it was different. He described him as a tall athlete who gets some bounce and said he bowled very well. It was the first look at many of Bangladesh’s quicks for the visiting batters, he explained, and Rana stood out with extra pace and bounce on a pitch that allowed it. The line-up was also short on experience, with several debutants.
Second spell
Rana came back and dismissed debutant Liam Scott and Xavier Bartlett, further unravelling the chase. Carey said Australia knew what to expect by then but still could not keep him out of the contest, which is what fast bowlers are meant to do.
Heated exchange with Inglis
The left-hander also commented on a sharp exchange between Rana and Inglis after the captain was dismissed. He had not yet spoken to Inglis, but felt a bit of spice is part of cricket as long as it does not go too far, and that it was simply two players in a contest.
The second and third ODIs of the series will take place in Dhaka on June 11 and June 14.
