AnalysisAshwin lauds Gujarat Titans’ calm, process-driven chase against Punjab Kings
Ravichandran Ashwin says Gujarat Titans’ planning and composure shaped their chase against Punjab Kings, singling out Washington Sundar’s role.
Gujarat Titans have had an up-and-down season. After two defeats at the start they won three in a row, including a one-run win over Delhi Capitals, then lost heavily to Mumbai Indians by 99 runs. With five wins from nine they remain in the playoff picture, helped by good home form.
Their latest result was a comfortable chase of 156 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, finishing 158/6 in 15.5 overs. Shubman Gill made 43 off 18 and Jos Buttler 39, while Jason Holder took Player of the Match for 12 off 10, 2/29 and three catches. Rashid Khan had earlier taken 2/19. Gill has 373 runs at 46.62 and Sai Sudharsan 328, while Kagiso Rabada (14 wickets) and Prasidh Krishna (12) lead the bowling.
Punjab Kings top the table with six wins from eight and a net run rate of +1.043. They chased 265 against Delhi Capitals in 18.5 overs, with Prabhsimran Singh scoring 76 off 26 and Shreyas Iyer 71 off 36, and also defended well in a 54-run win over Lucknow. Arshdeep Singh has eight wickets and Yuzvendra Chahal seven, though bowling consistency is still a work in progress.
Ahmedabad usually offers a balanced pitch with true bounce and a quick outfield, and T20 totals of 170–200 are common. Seamers can get some movement with the new ball, but batting gets easier. The surface may slow in the middle overs, helping spin, and the large boundaries reward timing over power. Dew can favour the chasing team.
At 7:30 pm in Ahmedabad it should be warm and mostly dry, around 30–34°C, with clear to hazy skies and moderate humidity. Rain is very unlikely and a light breeze is possible.
