A profile of Rashid Khan, the Afghan leg-spinner who rose from Nangarhar to become one of the most recognisable white-ball bowlers in world cricket.
Rashid Khan is an Afghan leg-spinner who has become one of the best-known bowlers in international and franchise cricket. Born in 1998 in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, he is closely identified with the rise of Afghan cricket from the associate ranks to full ICC membership.
Rashid learned the game as Afghan cricket developed rapidly in the 2000s and 2010s. He made his international debut in 2015 and quickly attracted attention for his pace through the air, his accuracy and his googly. Within a few years he was one of the leading spinners in the world, and reached 100 one-day international wickets in fewer matches than any bowler before him.
Rashid bowls right-arm leg-spin at a quicker pace than most wrist-spinners, with a flat trajectory that gives batters little time to adjust. He relies heavily on a fast googly and a sharply turning leg-break, and he can bowl in any phase of an innings. He is also a capable lower-order batter who hits cleanly, and a lively presence in the field.
Rashid has been in demand around the world. In the Indian Premier League he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad and later Gujarat Titans, who won the title in 2022. He has also played for Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League, Sussex in English domestic T20 cricket and Trent Rockets in The Hundred, as well as in other leagues.
For Afghanistan, Rashid has played all three formats, with his Test debut coming in 2018. He has captained the national side in white-ball cricket. Afghanistan’s run to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, with Rashid among the leading figures, was seen as a landmark moment for the country’s cricket.
Rashid’s importance goes beyond statistics. He became a symbol of hope in a country that has faced decades of upheaval, and his success helped to raise the profile of Afghan cricket worldwide. He has inspired a generation of young spinners and demonstrated that a player from a developing cricket nation could rank among the very best.
