Robin Uthappa has raised doubts about India’s squad for the Zimbabwe T20Is, wondering what the plan is for Sanju Samson once the team’s younger options start scoring runs.
Samson lost his spot in the XI to teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the ongoing T20I series against England. Reports say the wicketkeeper-batter is being rested, while Prabhsimran Singh has received his first T20I call-up for the Zimbabwe tour.
Who makes way?
On his YouTube channel, Uthappa asked what happens if Prabhsimran, Abhishek Sharma and Sooryavanshi all score heavily in Zimbabwe, noting that Sooryavanshi has already done well there at the Under-19 World Cup. If all three succeed, he wondered, does Prabhsimran make way when Samson returns?
The need for clarity
Uthappa stressed that selectors, team management and players must communicate openly to keep trust in the squad. If Samson really is being rested, he said, that should be stated plainly, because players have been described as rested in the past and never came back. He hoped the decision was part of a transparent, process-driven policy, otherwise players naturally begin to feel insecure.
Support for Sooryavanshi
Uthappa did back the inclusion of 15-year-old Sooryavanshi, calling him an important part of India’s future plans. He said the youngster can open or bat at No. 3, offering flexibility as cover for the opening positions or for Ishan Kishan.
With Samson’s absence and the rise of young talent both in the spotlight, India’s squad has become a major talking point before the Zimbabwe series.
