Coetzee Recalled as South Africa Pick 16 for Australia ODI Series

South Africa have announced a 16-man squad for their three-match ODI series against Australia, and the headline is the return of fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, who has not played 50-over cricket for the Proteas since the 2023 World Cup in India.

Series schedule

  • 1st ODI: September 24, Kingsmead, Durban
  • 2nd ODI: September 27, Wanderers, Johannesburg (Pink Day)
  • 3rd ODI: September 30, NWC Oval, Potchefstroom

Squad strengths

Coetzee joins a pace group that already includes Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Lungi Ngidi and Kwena Maphaka, while Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin provide spin. The batting order mixes experience in Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and David Miller with Ryan Rickelton, Matthew Breetzke, Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs. Marco Jansen offers all-round balance.

Temba Bavuma is back as captain.

A good record against Australia

South Africa have done well against Australia in recent ODIs. In 2023 they recovered from 2-0 down to win a five-match home series 3-2, and in 2025 they beat Australia 2-1 in a three-match series in Australia.

The full squad

Temba Bavuma (captain), Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Tony de Zorzi, Bjorn Fortuin, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs.
