Siraj in Doubt for Afghanistan Test, With Auqib Nabi Tipped to Step In

Mohammed Siraj’s place in India’s one-off Test against Afghanistan is uncertain, as the team management considers giving the pace bowler a rest following a demanding IPL season.

Heavy workload with Gujarat Titans

Siraj played all 17 of Gujarat Titans’ matches, including the final on May 31. Gujarat finished as runners-up after losing by five wickets to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Ahmedabad. That volume of cricket has led India to think about resting him before the red-ball fixture.

Reports say a decision should arrive within roughly 48 hours. Siraj has joined the squad in Chandigarh, and the medical team is keeping a close watch on him, with his participation hinging on assessments over the coming days.

Who could come in

Should Siraj be ruled out, selectors are expected to look at domestic performer Auqib Nabi. Young quick Gurnoor Brar could also be in line for a Test debut in that situation. A source quoted by TOI said Siraj has had a long season, and that if he sits out there is a strong chance Gurnoor plays and Nabi joins the squad.

Nabi has built his case in domestic cricket, taking 60 wickets in the Ranji Trophy season and playing a major part for Jammu & Kashmir. For now he is with the Indian group as one of the net bowlers helping with preparation for the Test. The others in that role are Gurjapneet Singh, Prince Yadav, Saransh Jain, Zeeshan Ansari and Shivang Kumar.

What follows

After the Test, India play a three-match ODI series in Dharamsala, Lucknow and Chennai, continuing a busy home season.
