Shubman Gill to Feature in New Sher-e-Punjab T20 League After Sri Lanka Tests

Shubman Gill will turn out in the first Sher-e-Punjab T20 League shortly after captaining India in the Test series against Sri Lanka, with the competition due to start on August 30.

Busy schedule for Gill

The 25-year-old leads India in two Tests, the first in Galle from August 15 and the second in Colombo from August 23. Gill is not currently part of India’s T20I squad, but he is set to play in Punjab’s new domestic tournament just days after the tour ends. Reports say fellow India seamer Gurnoor Brar will also play, and T20I players Arshdeep Singh and Abhishek Sharma are expected to take part.

At the league’s launch, Gill called it a great platform for young cricketers to show their talent and work towards representing Punjab and India. He said Punjab has always produced outstanding players, believed the league would uncover more, and congratulated the Punjab Cricket Association on the initiative.

League format

  • Six franchises: Amritsar, Fazilka, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali and Bathinda
  • Player auction on August 9, with each team signing one marquee player and at least two icon players
  • 27 round-robin matches, then the final on September 13

Strong IPL form

Gill arrives on the back of another fine IPL. Captaining Gujarat Titans in 2026, the opener scored 732 runs in 16 matches at an average of 45.75 and a strike rate of 196.22.
