Shreyas Iyer has described his batting as built around reading the situation rather than following a fixed template. Speaking to JioStar, the India batter said he enjoys adjusting to what a match asks of him.
Taking on the powerplay
Iyer said he looks to make use of field restrictions in the powerplay and to respond to aggressive bowling when pressure is high. By taking on bowlers who try to dominate early, he hopes to swing momentum his way.
Reading the opposition
The right-hander said he studies the field closely and tries to work out what the opposition has planned. In his view, bowlers often rely on aggression and varied tactics to unsettle batters, particularly in ODIs, where early wickets carry great weight.
Spotting those plans, Iyer believes, lets him pass the pressure back to the bowling side.
Platform first, then risk
Once he is in, his priority is to build a solid base for the batters who follow. Only after that does he take greater risks against the bowlers.
His comments sum up the mix of attacking intent and awareness of the match situation that has become central to his batting.
