Bangladesh fast bowler Rubel Hossain has announced his retirement from international cricket, saying recurring injuries have forced his decision. He intends to carry on playing domestic cricket.
A memorable debut
Rubel played his first international in 2009, an ODI against Sri Lanka in Mirpur. He became the first Bangladeshi bowler to take four wickets on debut, finishing with 4/33, which included Angelo Mathews, and Bangladesh won the match.
Career numbers
He made 159 international appearances in all: 27 Tests, 104 ODIs and 28 T20Is. In ODIs he took 129 wickets at an average of 34.31, which made him a key pace option for his country.
Career highlights
One of his best-remembered performances came at the 2015 ICC World Cup in Adelaide, where he took four wickets against England. It was a vital contribution to a famous Bangladesh victory that helped end England’s tournament early.
His best ODI figures came against New Zealand, 6/26 including a hat-trick, which won him the Player of the Match award. In Tests he took a five-wicket haul, 5/166 against New Zealand in Hamilton.
In his words
Rubel said the national team is his passion but that there came a point when he had to step away from international cricket. He thanked his family, friends, the media and supporters.
He leaves as one of Bangladesh’s notable fast bowlers and a figure in several of their historic wins.
