Rohit Sharma has spoken warmly about his friendship with Virat Kohli as India look ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The pair have been team-mates for almost two decades, having made their international debuts in 2007 and 2008 respectively, and both remain important to the national side. Speaking before India’s ODI series against the West Indies, Rohit said they share a strong camaraderie and understand what it takes to perform at the top. Their methods differ, he said, but that is how it should be because every individual is different.
Same Kohli, same approach
Rohit recalled how their friendship grew on tour and said they sometimes laugh while watching old footage of their careers. On Kohli’s contribution to Indian cricket, he said there is no question: it is there for everyone to see. He expects Kohli to be the same player as ever, preparing well, scoring runs and winning games for India.
Rohit also pointed to Kohli’s consistency and professionalism across different phases, whether Kohli was captaining the Test side or playing under Rohit.
No need to explain a World Cup
Kohli has already confirmed that the 2027 tournament will be his last ICC event. Rohit said he does not need to explain its importance to him, because a World Cup is a World Cup whether it is 2027 or 2023.
Rohit added that although they carry themselves differently on the field, their thinking for the team is the same: win matches, series and tournaments, and the World Cup. He said praise and encouragement have always flowed between them.
More time at home
Their schedules have also eased. Until a year ago, Rohit said, they were on tour every five to seven days, whereas now both spend more time at home with their families.
As India prepare for the World Cup, the long partnership between the two remains a central part of the team’s story.
