Kevin Pietersen Rejoins England as White-Ball Mentor Under McCullum

Kevin Pietersen is back in the England fold. The former batter has been named a specialist mentor for the white-ball sides and will start work during the forthcoming T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka, joining head coach Brendon McCullum’s backroom team.

A support group full of experience

Pietersen will operate alongside Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor. England are hoping his knowledge of high-pressure international cricket will give the players a useful source of guidance.

The move is Pietersen’s first official return to the England setup since his international career finished in 2014. He said he was proud to be asked to help England’s World Cup ambitions and was looking forward to working closely with the squad.

McCullum’s view

McCullum welcomed the appointment, pointing to Pietersen’s experience, knowledge and impact on English cricket. The head coach feels the batters in particular can gain a great deal from Pietersen’s understanding of what it takes to perform at the very top.

Eyes on 2027

England’s attention is firmly on the 2027 ODI World Cup, and the team hope Pietersen can add another dimension to their preparations as they chase success at that tournament.
