Karthik: India’s Decision to Bat First Showed an Ireland Hangover

Dinesh Karthik thinks India’s decision to bat first in the opening T20I against England was influenced by their recent troubles in Ireland.

With rain around, sides normally prefer to bowl first in T20s, since chasing can be easier under DLS. India, however, had failed to chase in both games in Ireland, and captain Shreyas Iyer chose to set a target instead. Karthik, quoted by Hindustan Times, called it a good decision but said the Ireland hangover was visible, with the team deciding not to chase.

Recovery from 6/2

The choice looked shaky when Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan fell cheaply and India were 6/2 inside two overs. Iyer and Abhishek Sharma then hit aggressive half-centuries to lift India to 189/7, before persistent rain ended the match without a result.

Iyer under the spotlight

The innings mattered for Iyer, who had been heavily criticised after scoring 13 runs in two Ireland matches. The new T20I captain made 68 from 47 balls, the top score of the innings. Karthik said a leader has to deliver with the bat and that Iyer did so well.

The Samson and Sooryavanshi debate

Samson fell cheaply again, and Tilak Varma also made little impact, so calls grew for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to be picked. Karthik disagreed, saying India should keep backing Samson, who delivered under pressure at the T20 World Cup a few months earlier. He said Sooryavanshi, though hugely talented and bound to do well internationally, still has to earn his place in the XI.
