Nitish Kumar Reddy has been withdrawn from India’s upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England because of a quadriceps injury. The young all-rounder had earlier sat out an ODI against Afghanistan with a sore left thigh, so the latest setback adds to concerns about his fitness record. Hardik Pandya is also unavailable, having been ruled out of both the Afghanistan and England ODI series.
Chopra’s warning on availability
Commentator and former opener Aakash Chopra reacted by joking that India’s seam-bowling all-rounders ought to carry a “fragile” label. He argued that the shortage of dependable options in that role could become a real problem as India build towards the 2027 ODI World Cup. Pandya and Reddy have both struggled to stay on the park, leaving few alternatives in a position Chopra described as one of the rarest in Indian cricket.
Shedge gets the nod
India have named Suryansh Shedge to replace Reddy for the T20I assignments. Chopra spoke highly of the Mumbai all-rounder, calling him a useful utility cricketer who has made an impression for Mumbai in domestic cricket and for Punjab Kings in the IPL. He felt the conditions on the tour could suit Shedge and give him a strong chance to show what he can do at international level.
A missed chance for Shashank
Chopra also had some sympathy for Punjab Kings all-rounder Shashank Singh. In his view, a better season might have put Shashank in line for the vacancy. While he acknowledged Shashank’s contributions in the field and with the ball, Chopra said a dip in batting form and a run of dropped catches probably cost him a national call-up.
With injuries continuing to hit key all-rounders, India’s management will be hoping that emerging players such as Shedge can add depth ahead of an important stretch in their white-ball planning.
