Veteran India batter Ajinkya Rahane has joined Amsterdam Flames for the first season of the ETPL, a new league aiming to grow cricket across Europe.
Why the signing matters
Rahane, who played more than 190 times for India across formats, is known for his calm temperament, sound technique and leadership. The Amsterdam-based franchise wants him to help build a strong cricket culture and support the sport’s growth on the continent, and expects him to contribute on and off the field.
Reactions
Steve Waugh, co-founder and Chief Cricket Officer of the club, called Rahane an ideal professional and praised his skill, resilience, humility and leadership. He said Rahane’s experience and winning mindset would help build one of Europe’s leading clubs.
Rahane said cricket has given him a great deal and that players should try to leave the game in a better state. He called Europe one of the sport’s most exciting frontiers and said he liked the club’s long-term vision.
ETPL co-owner Abhishek Bachchan described the signing as a significant milestone and said players of Rahane’s standing will lift the quality of play and mentor young European cricketers. Club CEO Tim Thomas called it a defining moment, saying Rahane’s professionalism and leadership match the club’s ambitions.
The franchise’s aims
Co-founded by Waugh, Amsterdam Flames want to become one of the ETPL’s flagship teams by pairing elite talent with long-term player development as they help shape cricket in Europe.
