Sri Lanka vs England Prediction & Match Preview – 1st ODI in Colombo
Sri Lanka and England open their ODI series at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Sri Lanka had a mixed 2025 in the format, winning seven and losing six of 13 matches at 5.27 an over and never getting past 298. Their home record was much stronger, with four wins in five ODIs in Sri Lanka.
Under Charith Asalanka the hosts have a settled, balanced squad. Pathum Nissanka made 401 runs in 13 matches last year and Kusal Mendis topped the charts with 500 in the same number of games. Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dhananjaya de Silva and Janith Liyanage return to add depth to the middle order, while Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis provide flexibility. The bowling is young, led by Asitha Fernando with Eeshan Malinga and Milan Ratnayake, and with conditions expected to suit spin the side is likely to include only one frontline seamer.
England had a difficult 2025 in ODIs, losing 11 of their 15 games despite scoring at 6.39 an over, with results swinging between a huge 414 and a low of 131. This series is a fresh start as they build towards the 2027 World Cup. Harry Brook takes charge as captain and faces a demanding task against a side England have historically found hard to beat in Sri Lanka. Their batting has depth, with plenty of all-rounders, and Jamie Overton can bowl at over 140 kmph. Like the hosts, England are expected to lean on spin, with two seamers who can also contribute with the bat.
Pitch report
The R Premadasa Stadium surface is usually good for batting in limited-overs cricket, with true bounce that lets batters play their shots once set. Seamers may get some movement early, but it fades. Spinners are important in the middle overs, where changes of pace and flight control scoring and take wickets. In day-night games dew can make chasing easier, though it should be minimal in an afternoon start.
Weather
On the afternoon of 22 January, Colombo should be warm at around 31–32°C with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. Humidity will be high, as usual on the coast, and a brief isolated shower cannot be ruled out, but the chance of rain during the match looks low. Light sea breezes should help.
Expected scores
- 1st innings: 270–290
- 2nd innings: 260–285
