Women's CricketWahab Riaz asks for patience as Pakistan women shift to a fearless T20 style
Pakistan women’s coach Wahab Riaz says a bolder approach needs time after the loss to India at the T20 World Cup, and that finishing games is the issue.
South Africa and Pakistan meet at Edgbaston in the 11th match of the tournament. South Africa’s likely XI has Laura Wolvaardt at the helm, backed by experience in Sune Luus, Marizanne Kapp, Nadine de Klerk and Chloe Tryon, with Sinalo Jafta behind the stumps and Shabnim Ismail leading the pace attack.
Pakistan, captained by Fatima Sana, have Gull Feroza, Muneeba Ali and Ayesha Zafar at the top, while Nashra Sandhu, Sadia Iqbal and Tasmia Rubab provide bowling options. They will rely on early wickets and disciplined bowling to stay competitive.
Conditions should be mild, with partly cloudy skies and a pitch that is good for batting once players are set. Movement in the first three to four overs could be crucial, and dew in the second innings might make chasing slightly easier. If the South Africa top order fires, their stronger depth is expected to decide it.
Edgbaston usually offers a balanced pitch for both batters and bowlers. Seamers can get swing and movement early, especially in cloudy weather, which makes the new-ball spell important. The surface then settles with true bounce for strokeplay but may slow later, bringing spinners and slower balls into play.
A mostly dry evening with broken cloud is expected, with temperatures of 19–21°C that cool gradually under lights. There is a slight chance of a passing light shower but no expectation of prolonged rain. Light to moderate winds could help swing bowlers early on.
Our preview picks South Africa on the strength of their batting depth.
Laura Wolvaardt leads South Africa and Fatima Sana leads Pakistan in our likely XIs.
Dew may appear in the second innings and make gripping the ball harder, which could slightly favour the chasing team.
