New Zealand vs West Indies 1st Test Prediction & Match Preview – Hagley Oval

New Zealand and West Indies begin a three-match Test series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Tuesday, 2 December.

New Zealand’s management has three selection decisions to make across the batting order. At the top, the choice is between left-hander Devon Conway, whose recent form has been patchy after a strong start to his career, and right-hander Will Young, who has delivered whenever called on. In the middle order, Mitchell Santner is expected to be picked ahead of Michael Bracewell, giving the side a spin-bowling all-rounder. Matt Henry is likely to lead the pace attack, with Zak Foulkes and Blair Tickner in support, and the final XI will be confirmed at the toss.

West Indies come off a poor white-ball leg, losing the T20I series 3-1 and the ODIs 3-0, and their Test form has been no better. They lost 2-0 to India in October, including an innings and seven-wicket defeat, two months after a 3-0 home loss to Australia. Shai Hope is expected to anchor the batting and Kemar Roach to lead the attack. The red-ball games give them a chance to rescue the tour.

Seamers should be rewarded early at Hagley Oval, and a first-innings lead of 50 to 70 runs could be decisive. We pick New Zealand.

Pitch report

Hagley Oval is known for a good balance in Test cricket. Fast bowlers get lively bounce and some seam movement early, especially with moisture in the air. The pitch then settles and becomes more batting-friendly with true bounce, and spin plays a smaller role, offering only light turn later in the match.

Weather

The start is expected to be mild and pleasant at around 16°C, partly sunny with light cloud and no sign of rain, with excellent visibility.

Expected scores

  • 1st innings: 280–320
  • 2nd innings: 260–300
