NewsShaheen Afridi Defends Pakistan’s Use of Flat Home Pitches
After Pakistan’s 2-1 series win over Australia, Shaheen Afridi says every team prepares helpful home pitches and Pakistan must do the same to win.
West Indies begin their ODI series against Sri Lanka at Sabina Park under pressure. They have lost five of their last six ODIs, and the one win in that spell came through a Super Over against Bangladesh. They sit 10th in the ICC ODI rankings and need results to push into the top eight and secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup. Their home record is a positive, as they have won four consecutive home ODI series since 2023.
Captain Shai Hope, with over 6,000 ODI runs at an average above 50, is the pillar of the batting. Keacy Carty has grown into a strong number three and Sherfane Rutherford offers late power. The bowling is boosted by the return of Alzarri Joseph, back from injury, and Shamar Joseph, with Jayden Seales and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie adding control.
Sri Lanka arrive more settled. Pathum Nissanka is in outstanding form, with a 210 against Afghanistan in 2024 among his achievements, and Kusal Mendis, Pavan Rathnayake, Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Janith Liyanage add depth. Wanindu Hasaranga returns to lead the spin attack alongside Dunith Wellalage, while Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka and Eshan Malinga can all reach about 140 kph.
Sabina Park is expected to give a fair balance between bat and ball. Fast bowlers should get help with the new ball thanks to the pace and bounce on offer, particularly in the opening overs. The surface then settles, allowing batters to build partnerships, and spinners can come into play in the middle overs through variation and occasional grip. First-innings totals of 280–300 are typically good, and above 320 is highly competitive.
Warm and mostly sunny conditions are forecast for the 11:00 am local start, at around 29–31°C. Humidity will be fairly high and it may feel muggy, but rain is not expected to be a major concern. Light winds should give some relief from the heat and a dry outfield is likely.
