Pakistan Cricket Team: History, Governing Body and Major Honours
Profile of the Pakistan national cricket team: Test debut in 1952, the PCB, the 1992 World Cup win, the 2009 T20 World Cup and a tradition of fast bowling.
The Pakistan national cricket team is one of the most distinctive sides in world cricket, known for producing fast bowlers, flamboyant batters and unpredictable results. Governed by the Pakistan Cricket Board, the team has won major global trophies in both the one-day and Twenty20 formats and is followed with great intensity at home and across the diaspora.
Test status and early years
Pakistan became a Test-playing nation in 1952, only a few years after independence, and played its first Test against India in Delhi in October of that year. The country was admitted as a full member of the International Cricket Council in 1953. In 1954 Pakistan drew a four-match series in England, winning the final Test at the Oval, a result that signalled the arrival of a new force. Hanif Mohammad, Fazal Mahmood and later Javed Miandad and Imran Khan were among the leading figures of the early and middle decades.
The 1992 World Cup
The most celebrated moment in the team’s history came in 1992, when Pakistan, captained by Imran Khan, won the ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The side had struggled early in the tournament but recovered to qualify for the semi-finals and defeated England in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The achievement remains a central part of the country’s sporting memory.
Other major titles
Pakistan won the T20 World Cup in 2009 in England, beating Sri Lanka in the final at Lord’s, and reached the final of the first edition in 2007. They also won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017, defeating India in the final at the Oval. The team has won the Asia Cup in 2000 and 2012 as well.
Fast bowling and style
Pakistan has a long tradition of fast bowlers who mastered reverse swing, from Imran Khan and Sarfraz Nawaz to Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, whose partnership in the 1990s is regarded as one of the best in the history of the game. Spinners such as Abdul Qadir and Saqlain Mushtaq and later Saeed Ajmal added variety, and the country has always been rich in talent.
Home cricket
International cricket in Pakistan was disrupted after the attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009, and the national team played home matches in the United Arab Emirates for several years. Home international cricket returned from 2015 onwards, and the Pakistan Super League, launched in 2016, has helped to restore the game’s profile at home.
