AnalysisWasim Akram Says Pakistan’s Problems Go Far Beyond the National Team
Wasim Akram blames weak domestic foundations and an unstable first-class system for Pakistan’s struggles, and says he foresaw a 3-0 loss to England.
A profile of Wasim Akram, the Pakistan left-arm fast bowler who took over 900 international wickets, with his style, highlights and legacy.
Wasim Akram is widely regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time. The left-armer from Lahore combined swing, seam, accuracy and sharp variations, and he delivered match-winning spells for Pakistan for almost two decades.
Born in Lahore, Wasim was spotted at a young age and made his international debut for Pakistan in 1984. He was soon taken under the wing of Imran Khan, who helped develop his skills and confidence. By the end of the decade he had become a leading member of the Pakistan attack.
Wasim’s hallmark was a quick, whippy left-arm action that generated late swing in both directions with the new ball and reverse swing with the old one. He could change pace without noticeable change in his action, which made him particularly difficult to read, and he was also a talented lower-order left-handed hitter.
In the 1992 World Cup final at Melbourne, he took two wickets in two balls, those of Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis, which proved decisive as Pakistan beat England. He took two Test hat-tricks in 1999, both against Sri Lanka, and he played in the 1999 World Cup, in which Pakistan reached the final. As a batter he made 257 not out against Zimbabwe at Sheikhupura in 1996, a very high score for a bowler.
He finished with 414 Test wickets and 502 wickets in one-day internationals, as of the end of 2024. In county cricket he played for Lancashire and Hampshire, and in the Indian Premier League he appeared for Kolkata Knight Riders.
Wasim retired from international cricket in 2003. Many players and commentators regard him as one of the finest left-arm bowlers the game has seen, and he later worked as a commentator and coach. His partnership with Waqar Younis is often cited as one of the most effective new-ball pairings in cricket history.
