Brett Lee: Profile of Australia’s Express Fast Bowler

A profile of Brett Lee, the Australian fast bowler known for his speed and smiling demeanour, covering his career, highlights and legacy.

Brett Lee was one of the quickest bowlers of his generation. Born in Wollongong, New South Wales, in 1976, he combined genuine pace with a good-natured personality, and he became popular with supporters around the world.

Early life and rise

Lee made his Test debut for Australia in 1999 and soon made an impression with his speed. His powerful run-up and strong action allowed him to produce deliveries that regularly exceeded 150 kilometres per hour, and he became a key part of Australia’s attack alongside Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie.

Playing style

Lee relied on pace, bounce and a dangerous yorker. As his career advanced he added subtle variations and became more disciplined. Late in his career he developed useful skill as a limited-overs bowler, and he was also a capable lower-order batter.

Lee took 310 wickets in 76 Tests and 380 wickets in 221 one-day internationals (as of the end of 2024). He took a hat-trick against Kenya at the 2003 World Cup, which Australia went on to win, and he was part of the side that won the tournament again in 2007. At Edgbaston in the 2005 Ashes, he helped bring Australia within two runs of a famous Test victory, batting in a tense final partnership.

He also played Twenty20 internationals and had spells in the Indian Premier League with Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders. He retired from international cricket in 2012.
