Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, St Lucia: History and Facts

A guide to the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet, St Lucia, formerly Beausejour Stadium, and its role in Caribbean and World Cup cricket.

Overview

The Daren Sammy Cricket Ground is in Gros Islet, in the north of Saint Lucia. It was originally known as the Beausejour Stadium and was renamed in 2016 in honour of Daren Sammy, the St Lucian who captained the West Indies to the World T20 title in 2012 and again in 2016.

The setting, surrounded by green hills and with the Caribbean nearby, makes it one of the most scenic grounds in the region.

History and major events

The ground opened in 2002 and was used for the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. It has hosted Test matches, one-day internationals and Twenty20 internationals, and was a venue for the 2010 T20 World Cup. It was also used for matches in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

It is also the home venue of St Lucia’s franchise in the Caribbean Premier League, which has been known under different names over the years.

Pitch and conditions

The surface has tended to play slower than at some Caribbean venues, with spinners and cutters often useful. Bounce can be uneven at times, and large scores have not always come easily.

Humid conditions and the possibility of showers are regular factors in the wet season.

Why the ground matters

Renaming the stadium after a local hero tied it closely to the island’s identity and to Sammy’s success as a captain. It is Saint Lucia’s main international venue, and check West Indies Cricket for current facility details.
