India Cricket Team: History, Governing Body and Major Honours

Profile of the India cricket team: Test debut at Lord’s in 1932, the BCCI, World Cup wins in 1983 and 2011, T20 World Cup titles and its global influence.

The India national cricket team is one of the most followed sports teams in the world. Governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, it plays Test matches, one-day internationals and Twenty20 internationals, and its fixtures draw some of the largest television audiences in sport. The side is also known as Team India and as the Men in Blue.

Early years

India played its first Test match in June 1932 against England at Lord’s, becoming the sixth nation to be granted Test status. Progress was slow in the early decades. India’s first Test victory came in 1952 against England in Madras, and the first series win in England followed in 1971 under Ajit Wadekar, a landmark moment for the side. The team’s spin bowlers, led by figures such as Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and S. Venkataraghavan, were central to home success.

The 1983 World Cup

The turning point in the team’s global standing came in 1983, when India, led by Kapil Dev, won the ODI World Cup in England by defeating the West Indies in the final at Lord’s. The team had been given little chance before the tournament, and the victory is generally credited with transforming the popularity of cricket in India. It also helped create the commercial and organisational base from which the Indian game later became dominant.

Global competitions

India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 under M. S. Dhoni, beating Pakistan in the final in Johannesburg. Dhoni also captained the team to the 2011 ODI World Cup, won on home soil with a final victory over Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 and the T20 World Cup for a second time in 2024, beating South Africa in the final in Barbados. The team has also won the Asia Cup on several occasions.

Home conditions and the global game

India’s home Test venues, among them Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the Chepauk ground in Chennai and Wankhede Stadium, are known for their turning pitches and passionate crowds. The country is also the base of the Indian Premier League, which has had a major effect on the economics of the game and on the development of young players. The BCCI is one of the wealthiest sports bodies in the world and holds significant influence within the International Cricket Council.

Rivalries

The best-known rivalry is with Pakistan, though the two teams meet only in multi-nation tournaments because of political tensions. Series against Australia, notably the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and against England are also among the main fixtures of the international calendar.
